Santo Garovaglio

Santo Garovaglio(Como, 1805 - Pavia, 1882)

Eminent botanist, professor at the University of Pavia, founder of the "Laboratory of Cryptogamic Botany” the first of its kind, later become "Italian Cryptogamic Laboratory". Santo Garovaglio was responsible of the introduction, in italian universities, of the Chairs of Pharmacy, realized with the contribution of his colleagues.

Furthermore he was director, from 1852 to 1882 of the Botanical Garden of Pavia, previously established for want of Maria Theresa in 1773 as part of the overall renovation of the University; in this institution, which still exists, he left a fund of 6000 volumes on botany.
