Ticinesi Stock

Ticinesi StockReconstructing the history of the stock is not easy, not only because it is intimately connected to the events of the Aldini Stock, but also because it was enriched with new acquisitions over the course of the XIXth century. The history of the Ticinesi Stock was in fact a result of the decision to enhance the private collection of manuscripts of Pier Vittorio Aldini purchased in 1840, with the establishment of a specific stock, which began to develop independently. The Ticinesi stock can be briefly defined as a collection of texts either handwritten or printed (interleaved and annotated) relevant to the area of Pavia: studies, drafts of essays, summaries of work, copies of famous and rare texts.

The first unit of the stock consists of a mixture (38 volumes) of printed pamphlets and, to a lesser extent, manuscripts, called Ticinensia, arrived in the Library between 1822 and 1826 along with the books left by Siro Comi at the University Library; the miscellany is placed, all together, in n. 1 of Ticinesi Stock.

In 1827, by government decree, part of the Diplomatic Archive of Pavia, formed in 1799 with the archives of the suppressed religious corporations and kept at the monastery of Carmine was filed in the Library; it collected, along with a considerable number of diplomas, some manuscripts.

In 1842, with the new decree, the material was transported to Milan, from where he returned to the Library of Pavia in 1851. Among the codices finally recovered (probably 13) there are important texts such as the De iurisdictione, imperio et potestate ecclesiastica ac seculari libri tres by Giacomo Menochio (Lugduni, JA Cramer et P. Perachon, 1695; location: MN 18 E 3).

The library, now consolidated in its cultural prestige was offered to students of national history as the privileged place for collection of sources that, gradually, were enriched by new donations; in 1835 manuscripts by biblical scholar and orientalist Siro Beretta della Torre were donated along with, in 1838; those of the scholar Elia Giardini; in 1840 also some notes on milan history by Pietro Verri.
But it is only since 1861 that the stock gained consistency and appearance. In the same year manuscripts that once belonged to Giuseppe Robolini, then passed to the director Luigi Lanfranchi and to the heirs of those sold to the Library, were purchased. Giuseppe Robolini, student of law and history, figurehead of the society and culture of Pavia, had gathered dozens of manuscripts containing the works, autograph or copies of the main historians who had preceded him, including Bernardo Sacco, Girolamo Bossi, Giacomo Parodi, Pietro Pessani and especially the latest Siro Severino Capsoni and Siro Comi.

On the same occasion the Library was enriched with many other important testimonies of local history (for example, the archive of the Accademia degli Affidati and, of course, the works of the same Robolini, a notable collection of minute, notes, indexes, analytics, largely served for the preparation of Notizie appartenenti alla storia della sua patria (Pavia, Fusi, 1823-1838; location: Cpav Storia 5) published from 1823 to 1838.

In the same 1861 manuscripts by Giovanni Gaspare Beretti around the cultural history of Pavia were donated to the library.

A whole new section was added in 1874 (but had to wait eighty years to be on file): the manuscripts of the doctor Giovanni Capsoni grandson of the historian Siro Severino. In 93 large dossiers is contained a thick collection of cards and notebooks testifying ther curiosity and industriousness of versatile Capsoni, which accumulated data on data on hydrology and medicine, meteorology and statistics, onomastics and local history and more.

The stock currently consists of 821 units, of which 36% has not the unitary form of the codex, but that of the aggregation of sheets collected in folders and files. Pavia and its territory are prevalent arguments (regarding about 45% of the manuscripts); as for dating the 36% is attributable to the XVIII century and 48% to the XIX and XX centuries.

The stock is supplied wtih two main instruments: the manuscript inventory, a large registry of 510 pages which until 2005 was the only access to the stock, and the digitized one which allows you to search by author, signature and keywords.
